What is the Terry Whalen Chapter of the National Honor Society? West Chester East High School’s National Honor Society is a large, active service organization within East High School. The primary purpose of East’s Honor Society is to serve the school community and to instill the belief of social responsibility in its members through the National Honor Society’s Tutoring Program. In order to become a member of this prestigious organization, students must demonstrate excellence in the areas of character, leadership, scholarship, and service.
How does a student request a tutor? · Student secures a tutoring request form located in the Guidance Department’s Student Center. · Student completes the form, securing the required signatures, and places it in the NHS tutoring request box on the counter in Guidance. · Student will receive a Gold NHS pass during homeroom from the assigned tutor. · The tutor and student will meet in Room 101 (Drop in Center) and arrange their meetings over the course of the month. How does a student become a member of the Honor Society? · The screening process begins in second semester of Junior Year. · A cumulative GPA of 3.5 and no Level II or III suspensions are required. · Candidates must complete a personal profile which includes all activities in and out of school. · Two community services letters of reference are required with signature verifications from the organizations. o All school-related clubs, sports, activities and courses do not count. o Check the community service binder in Room 108 or go online at www.usafreedomcorps.gov to find service opportunities. o Service is an absolute requirement. (A minimum of 10 hours for each of the two community service participations is needed.) o After the screening process, a formal letter welcomes new members to participate in the induction ceremony. o Membership is both prestigious and permanent. Members are required to reflect the oath of the NHS in their daily lives and to participate in the tutoring program as well as other NHS sponsored activities.
