A message from Mrs. Gettis

Welcome to Exton Elementary and the 2008-2009 school year. Our school opened in 1940 as West Whiteland Consolidated School and replaced the five one-room schools in West Whiteland. Later, when the school became a part of the West Chester Area School District, its name was changed to Exton Elementary.

This year in conjunction with the district and school strategic plans, we plan to focus on positive character traits and our theme is "Fly Like an Eagle." One of the strategies from our District’s Strategic Plan (2002) states: ’We will identify, teach, and model the character traits and behaviors for everyone to become responsible, respectful, contributing citizens in our diverse school community.’ With this theme we continue our work from last year on developing the positive character traits of respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, and citizenship. Look for special activities throughout the year that will promote our theme.

Communication between home and school is extremely important at Exton Elementary. The handbook should serve as handy reference to inform you regarding our school or district policies. Take time to read through and review certain information with your child. It is also important that you familiarize yourself with the West Chester Area School District handbook entitled, Discipline and Records Policies.

Your child's teacher will communicate with you regularly on both the instructional program and your child's progress. Please feel free to ask questions and seek help from the teacher whenever needed. Also, my door is always open and I welcome input from parents and am willing to help you with various issues.

As always I encourage you to be an active partner in your child's education. Become a member of the PTO and participate in many of our school activities. The PTO will let you know the various ways that you can became involved and if you can, volunteer some time at school. I look forward to working with you for a successful, happy, healthy school year!
