The intent of this pilot program is to enrich our gifted children and create an environment that will challenge students in the classroom by providing the most instructionally appropriate curriculum in math and language arts.
The first part of the pilot program is a “pull-out” enrichment program. Once a week for 45 minutes, gifted students will meet with their grade level peers to participate in enrichment activities developed by the gifted resource teacher. The enrichment activities will be developed based on the student’s interest, student ability, and district curriculum. These activities will center on various content areas developed for three rotations during the school year.
The second part of the program is a “push-in” differentiated curriculum for both math and language arts that will meet the educational academic needs of the gifted students. Multiple criteria are used to help to determine each individual’s academic talent, as well as pinpoint achievement levels. Math instruction will be implemented according to the students' achievement and ability levels. Flexible grouping, differentiated instruction, curriculum compacting, and tiered assignments will be used (see Glossary for definitions). Language Arts instruction will focus on higher level reading and vocabulary development. Similar to mathematics, flexible grouping, differentiating instruction, curriculum compacting, and tiered assignments will be used. Both the Mathematics and Language Arts push-in portion will occur in the regular education classroom at least 2 times a week per subject or more based on student need.
