Fugett Students Present Gift to Bryn Mawr Rehab

Patients at the Bryn Marr Rehabilitation Center in Paoli have received a bonanza of gifts from sixth grade students at Fugett Middle School in the form of over 10 handmade lap quilts and 50 wheelchair and walker bags. The students, who presented the items to the Center on April 12, sewed them over the course of this year in teacher Darlene Snyder’s family and consumer science classes. Virtually the entire sixth grade was involved in the project.

The individual squares on the lap quilts were hand designed and painted by the students and then stitched into the quilts. For the wheelchair and walker bags, the students used scraps of colorful materials in a variety of designs.

"They’re great,” Claire Small, clinical team leader in the physical therapy department at Bryn Mawr, said as she accepted the gifts. "When our patients are sitting in their wheelchairs waiting for therapy to begin, they can get a little chilled. The quilts will help prevent that,” she added. Lap quilts were also included in the gift to the Center.

Lap quilts were also included in the gifts to the center.

"The walker and wheelchair bags are fantastic,” she also said. “We can give them to the patients to take home with them. They can attach the bags to the front of their walkers or wheelchairs and carry their phone or other small items in them as they move from one room to another.”

Snyder said her sixth grade students have been making the quilts and bags for a number of years. Other nursing homes and hospitals in the area have also received them as gifts in the past.

Babies in Middle School?!

Fugett's Family and Consumer Science classes invited some moms and babies to come to school this spring for "Baby Day." We're learning how to take care of babies and it was great to get to observe the tots in person. We talked to the moms about feeding schedules, sleep schedules, what they do when the babies are awake, what they look for in a babysitter, and many other topics. The babies' ages ranged from 9 weeks to 7 months. They were a delight to everyone. Thanks to all the moms who were so generous with their time.
