What is Learning Support?
Students that are identified as "a child with a disability" are serviced
through the Learning Support program at Penn Wood Elementary School. The
Learning Support program is a special education service. Students are
identified by the Child Study Team at Penn Wood.
How does a child qualify for special education services?
The Child Study Team meets to review current records, observe and
assess the student on informal and standardized assessments. The team
answers the following questions:
1. Is there a disability?
2. Is there a need for specially designed instruction?
Once the team decides that a child has a disability and requires
specially designed instruction, the IEP team convenes to write the
child's Individualized Educational Plan(IEP).
What is an IEP?
An IEP or Individualized Educational Plan is the curriculum for special
education students. It is the basic curricular map for special education
students, detailing the goals and objectives for each student who has
special education and related services needs.
