Brief explanation: Red Ribbon Week came into existence out of the tragic death of DEA Special Agent Enrique Camarena. In 1985, Camarena was murdered while in Mexico investigating drug traffickers. Friends and family in his hometown decided to use the red ribbon as a symbol of the fight against drug abuse. In 1988, the United States Congress proclaimed Red Ribbon Week, and more than 100,000 schools participate.
