WESTTOWN-THORNBURY'S
SUMMER READING
2008

Dear
Parents/Guardians,
As you know the
best way for children to become better readers is to read often and
to read a wide variety of books. Children should select books that
they can read within a two week time span. They should know all the
words and understand what the author is telling them. We at
Westtown-Thornbury want all of our students to read over the
summer. We hope they will relax and find pleasure in a good book.
We are asking each
student to read the following over the summer months:
1st - 2nd grade: at least 10 picture books
3rd-4th grade: at least 5 chapter books
There is a chart
(which was sent home) on which each child can keep track of the
books she or he has read. The chart
may be duplicated if more space is needed. This chart should be
returned to the child's classroom teacher in September. Students
who read the ten (10) picture books or the five (5) chapter books
and return the completed chart will receive a certificate of
participation at a grade level assembly in the fall. His or her
name will also be placed on our Reading Honor Roll. We would love to
have EVERY child in the school meet this reading goal!!!
Thanks for your
cooperation. Have a great summer!
Sincerely the Staff
at Westtown-Thornbury
P.S. If your child
would like to read both picture books and chapter books, we will
count two picture books as one chapter book.
